Introduction to Dave The Diver Experience
Dave The Diver is a game that combines fishing, cooking, farming, and business simulation in a unique and immersive way. The game is currently on sale for ‎$19.99 on Steam. Is it worth buying? To my surprise, I found that this game exceeded my expectations and delivered a lot of value for its price. In this blog post, I will share with you my experience and opinion of this game from two aspects: gameplay and details.
What sets Dave The Diver apart?
Another aspect that sets Dave The Diver apart is its storyline. The game follows the journey of Dave, a skilled diver who embarks on a mission to uncover the secrets of an ancient underwater civilization. As you progress through the game, you will unravel the mysteries of the deep sea and discover the truth behind the lost civilization. The storyline is engaging and keeps you hooked from beginning to end, making it a truly worthwhile gaming experience.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Dave The Diver consists of four main elements: fishing, cooking, farming, and business simulation. At first, I thought that fishing was the main focus of the game, since the game is called Dave The Diver after all. However, after playing for a while, I realized that the other three elements were equally fun and engaging.
The game uses a time management system, where each day is divided into four time slots. During the day, you can dive twice to catch fish. At night, you can run your sushi restaurant twice. As the game progresses, you can also dive at night to catch rare fish species, but this will reduce your business hours and income. Therefore, you have to balance between fishing and making money.
The Fishing
The fishing aspect of the game is very rich and diverse. The types of fish you can catch depend on various factors such as depth, weather, location, etc. The fishing methods are also different. You can kill the fish first and then catch them, but they will not be fresh and only have one-star quality. You can use a harpoon to catch the fish alive, but they will have two-star quality. The freshest fish are those that you catch with anesthesia or nets, which have three-star quality. There are also some large fish that are hard to catch alive unless you have high-tech equipment. Some fish will attack you actively. It is worth mentioning that underwater, your character only has an oxygen meter, which also represents your health and stamina. Oxygen will deplete naturally and faster when you sprint or get attacked. When oxygen runs out, your diving session will end forcibly and you can only choose one item to take back. Of course, you can also choose to end the session early and take all your items back.
The fish you catch will be made into dishes and sold in your sushi restaurant. But this is not a simple process of exchanging goods for money. After fishing, you have to change into casual clothes and design your menu for the night. Then you have to serve tea, dishes, clean tables, grind wasabi for your customers. You can recruit staff through three channels: flyers, TV, and internet. The more expensive the channel, the more likely you are to recruit rare staff. You can train your staff according to their attributes and skills and assign them to different positions. You can also send them to find ingredients. You can also decorate and upgrade your restaurant to attract fans. You can open your phone’s Cookstar app and see what your fans ate today and what their reviews are. You can also ask professionals to evaluate your restaurant’s level on this app. You can also develop new dishes that sell higher and have better reputation than simple sushi or sashimi. But high-end dishes sometimes have sudden demand spikes, so you have to keep an eye on your financial report every night. When your business reaches a certain level, you can even open branches.
The Business System
Underwater, this is a pure adventure fishing game. But at night, this is a realistic business simulation game. The gameplay and content are absolutely not sloppy. But when I thought this was a business simulation game, it turned into a farming game. As the game progresses, you will unlock ponds and fields. When fishing, you have a chance to get corresponding fish eggs that you can hatch in ponds. When there are two fish of the same species in a pond, they will start breeding. If the fish density is too high, breeding will stop. Then you have to sell some fish or send them directly to the kitchen for slaughter. Of course, you can also expand the pond area to reduce density. The fields can only grow rice at first. All you have to do is weed occasionally. So I didn’t expect much from this module until one day the old man who manages the farm called me mysteriously to find him.
I went over and saw that I didn’t enter the wrong game. Then this game became a farming game. You need to sow seeds, water them, fertilize them, weed them. You can also raise chickens and collect eggs. Of course, the farm’s crops are all things that can’t be found in the sea, so you can make unique dishes. Managing ponds and fields does not consume time slots, so you can treat these gameplay as auxiliary to your business. But when these gameplay were designed, they were definitely not perfunctory. Each gameplay is worth playing and can withstand playing.
Details:
One of the most impressive aspects of Diver Dave is the attention to detail. The game is full of surprises and features that make it more realistic and immersive. For example, when I started the game, I spent 10 minutes playing with Dave’s phone, which is the most realistic phone I’ve ever seen in a game. Every app on the phone has a function and a purpose, such as equipment upgrades, game guide, task list, resource collection, crop monitoring, music player, and even a mini-game where you can raise a cyberpunk electronic fish. This phone integrates all the functions that should be in the game menu, but in a much cooler and cleaner way.
Fishing and cooking mechanics
Another example of the amazing details in the game is the fishing and cooking mechanics. Fishing requires different types of harpoons that can be upgraded through underwater treasure chests. Each harpoon has a different QTE (quick time event) when catching fish. Some fish are more difficult to catch alive than others, and some will attack you. You also have to manage your oxygen level, which affects your health and stamina. The fish you catch can be made into dishes and sold in your sushi restaurant, but you also have to design your menu, serve your customers, hire and train your staff, decorate and upgrade your restaurant, develop new dishes, and monitor your financial report. You can also use other tools such as cutting machines and watering machines, which have their own interactive mini-games. Even in cooking competitions, you have to play a cooking mini-game yourself, which varies depending on the dish.
Cutscenes and plots
The game’s cutscenes are also very interesting and well-made. They reflect the personality and style of each character. For example, foodies will often come to your restaurant to taste your dishes, and each one has a distinctive animation. When you develop new dishes or strengthen existing ones, there are also different cutscenes that show the process. The most surprising cutscene for me was when I triggered a plot where the gunsmith character, who is an otaku, dreamed of cheering for his idol at a concert. The scene turned into a shadow game where I had to use two joysticks to simulate glow sticks and swing them with the rhythm. It was very immersive and fun! There are many more details in the game that surprised me, but some of them are only fleeting. For example, the glue gun and the shadow game in the dream, and the cooking mini-game in the cooking competition are only played once in the plot. They are not even included in the mini-game later. These content can be replaced by CG or simply skipped, but they show how much effort and creativity the developers put into this game. The game gives me the feeling that there is no genius creative design, but just doing everything that can be done well and pulling all the details to the max. This seriousness is like Bancho, the chef in the game, who treats his dishes with a near-religious seriousness.
